Elemental is a modular wardrobe system composed of eleven different storage units, each designed around a particular storage requirement.
By separating the functions of a conventional wardrobe into individual elements, the system can be assembled in different configurations according to the space and needs of its owner. The individual units can be easily transported and rearranged, while together providing the storage capacity of a larger built-in wardrobe.
The detailing explores two characteristics of pine plywood: its directional grain and the layered construction revealed along its cut edge. Each unit is conceived as a simple box, with the exposed plywood edge forming a continuous frame around its front and back. Adjacent faces rotate the direction of the grain by ninety degrees and meet at mitred corners, bringing the contrasting grain directions together while allowing the layered edge to continue around the frame. Doors and drawer fronts sit flush with the front of each unit, with handles routed directly into their faces.
