New workshops, educational facilities and the total renovation of an existing 1960s museum building for Follo open-air museum.
Follo museum is an open-air museum with a collection of historic buildings from across the south-east of Norway. The museum required new workshop facilities for traditional craftsmanship as well as a new entrance to the open-air museum,
Our project ´steinblokker og filleryer` proposes three ´stones` positioned on different levels within the undulating landscape of bare mountain and rock. The forms and placement of the buildings, are defined by the spaces between the existing oak trees, all of which are retained. The facades of the monolithic volumes have cut-outs adjacent to key openings, which are inlayed with different examples of traditional Norwegian building techniques.
The project reimagines the existing museum building as the principal entrance to the open-air museum, replacing its closed masonry facade with a glass facade of upcycled windows.
The renovated museum building is connected to the new buildings through a landscaping surface of recycled stone. The striped floor pattern, together with the use of recycled materials, references ´filleryer` - the traditional carpets woven out of old textiles, which have had a central place in the Norwegian home for generations.
